Last week of Fall ‘09 in the Coffeehouse
This week, we’re closing out the semester with a couple of fantastic shows, including one that the committee as a whole has been really excited about for the whole phase.
Tonight, Sprawl is in the Coffeehouse at 7:30. Critical Studies’ monthly reading series is exploring the relationship between the written word and other art forms, and it’s going to be a great night of interdisciplinary work.
This weekend, Silken Veils will be playing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. With multiple performances each day, there’s no reason not to see this great piece!
Silken Veils is one woman’s journey through her childhood in search of closure for the choices made by her parents. In this piece, weaving from the Iranian revolution of 1978 to the current Green Revolution of 2009, Darya (the Protagonist) returns to Iran to visit the graves of her parents. It is through puppets, music, shadows and animation that we journey through the lives, struggles and deaths of her family.
It plays Friday at 12:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., 7 p.m., and 11:15 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Don’t miss it!
Thinking about Phase 3 yet?
We know, January seems so far away, and the break is so much more delightful a prospect to be considering, but it’s time to start thinking about your phase 3 events in the Coffeehouse!
Phase 3 submissions will open on January 14 (the first day of class sign-ups) and will close on January 21, so we want to make sure that you’re thinking about it and putting together your teams and projects before you leave for break.
Phase 3 will run from February 1 through March 21 (which is the day before spring break starts). As always, submissions will only be accepted online, and the form will be available on January 14.
Holiday shopping?
Looking for a unique CalArts gift for a proud parent (or anyone else who might be invested in your education here, for that matter)?
Check out the Coffeehouse store, with clothing, mugs, and more featuring the Coffeehouse logo!
Or — if you’d rather get it in person — stop by the student store to pick up a Coffeehouse t-shirt or talk to one of the committee members to get one from us.
This week in the Coffeehouse
We’ve got some pretty fantastic events coming up in the Coffeehouse before the end of the semester! If you need a break from that last-minute cramming to get your projects and portfolios done, we’ve got some great opportunities for you.
This week…
Thursday night at 7 and 10 p.m., the Coffeehouse will host Authenticity (A Musical). Using the 1984 teen exploitation film “Breakin’” as its source material, Authenticity (a musical) examines issues of authenticity, appropriation, re-enactment, and re-presentation. Key scenes from the film are reinterpreted through video, dance, and music, creating a multi media environment in which larger issues of artistic integrity are examined.
Authenticity (a musical) confronts the philosophical and artistic ideas of authenticity by questioning the role of art and artist as both a contributor to and product of external societal values such as history and commercialism.
Saturday night at 8 p.m., come by and check out a night of musical performances by several CalArts bands such as Bianca Gisselle and Mo Funk.
Bianca Gisselle is a singer/songwriter with a rock pop soul dance vibe. Mo Funk is a pure motown funk cover band covering songs from Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, etc.
This promises to be a great evening to unwind and take a break, just in time to gear up for the last couple of weeks of the semester.
See you there!
Don’t miss “Sprawl” tonight!
Don’t miss sprawl, tonight at 7:30 PM in the Coffeehouse!
This regular event by writing students in the Critical Studies school will explore the ways in which the written word interacts with other artistic disciplines. Sprawl is always a Coffeehouse favorite, and this one will be no different!
