Beutner Family Award for Excellence in the Arts APPLICATION PDF
Austin Beutner, Chair of the CalArts Board of Trustees, and his wife Virginia made a gift of $1 million to help twenty extraordinary CalArts students complete their studies and make strong entrances to professional life. The primary consideration for this award is the applicants’ excellence in pursuit of their métier and potential for promising careers in the arts.
Over the course of four years beginning in 2010/11, five scholarships of up to $50,000 each will fund undergraduate and/or graduate students in their final year of study. These scholarships are intended to pay the full cost of attending CalArts, thereby reducing student loan indebtedness. The amount of the award that exceeds tuition and fees may be used for room, board, books and materials associated with a recipient’s studies and practice. By law, this portion of the award will be considered taxable income by the Franchise Tax Board and the Internal Revenue Service.
Eligibility
To be eligible, undergraduate and graduate students must have satisfactorily completed sufficient degree requirements to make graduation likely the following year. (Recipients who do not graduate on schedule will not be eligible for a second award). Further, applicants must provide evidence of financial need (i.e. qualify for federal financial aid) and file the 2010 FAFSA by January 15, 2010.
2009/10 Application Process
Step 1
An application form is attached and available from the Office of Enrollment Management. Eligible students must submit their application to the Dean of Enrollment Management on Friday, December 4, 2009.
Step 2
Each dean will review the applications of the students in his or her school, considering the applicants’ excellence in pursuit of their métier, potential for promising careers in the arts, and financial need.
Step 3
Up to three finalists will be selected from each school by December 31, 2009. Notification will be sent via email to each student’s CalArts email address.
Step 4
Selected finalists are required to complete the 2010 FAFSA (available at fafsa.ed.gov) by January 15, 2010. Finalists may also be asked to provide tax returns at a later date.
Step 5
Finalists must also submit work samples in a digital format (e.g. CD, DVD, PDF) by January 15. Work may include up to 20 images; writing samples up to 10 pages; recordings/performances/scores/choreography no more than 10 minutes in length.
Selection of 2010/2011 Beutner Family Artists
A selection committee comprised of a representative of the Beutner family, the CalArts president, the Dean of Enrollment Management, one or more CalArts alumnus/na, and one or more member of the CalArts faculty (including deans and the provost) will review the finalists’ applications and submitted work.
The committee will select five Beutner Family Artists from the pool of nominees and announce the recipients in March 2010. Recipients will receive their awards when they register for classes in August 2010 and December 2011.
Responsibilities of Beutner Family Artists
While students, Beutner Family Artists may be asked to meet with the donors and other Trustees and will be expected to make every effort to be available. Prior to graduation, Beutner Family Artists must write a few paragraphs about their final year at CalArts and their plans for the future. CalArts will share these impressions with the donors and may excerpt them in its online and printed materials.
As their artistic careers flourish, the Beutner Family Artists will be asked, from time to time, to return to CalArts to speak with students, be available for interviews, play a role in Institute events, and/or talk with donors about the impact of scholarship support on their lives during and after their time at CalArts. Their participation in these activities will help illustrate the importance of supporting CalArts students as they prepare for careers in the arts. CalArts and the donors hope their experiences will inspire the Beutner Family Artists and many others to find myriad ways to offer emerging artists encouragement and support.
