Guest Artist Workshop
Michael Polish
is an alumni of Cal Arts who works collaboratively with his identical twin brother Mark Polish. The critically claimed multi award winning Polish Brothers began their film career with the 1999 Sundance debut of their first feature, Twin Falls Idaho. Their other films include Jackpot, Northfork starring James Woods and Nick Nolte, The Astronaut Farmer and Stay Cool both starring Billy Bob Thorton and Manure starring Winona Rider.
In 2005, the Polish Brothers, along with producing partner Jonathan Sheldon wrote and released the Declaration of Independent Filmmaking. The book, a how-to guide for first-time, DIY filmmakers, follows the filmmaking process and gives firsthand accounts of the Polish Brothers’ travails in making their films.
M. DAVID MULLEN, ASC
studied filmmaking and cinematography at the California Institute of the Arts, where he received his Master’s Degree in 1991. Since then, he has photographed more then thirty independent feature films and two television series.
He was nominated for the IFP Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography in 2000 for “Twin Falls Idaho” and again in 2004 for “Northfork”, both films by Michael and Mark Polish. He also photograhed “Manure”, “Stay Cool” and “The Astronaut Farmer” for the Polish Brothers.
He also has photographed a number of features in high definition video, including “Jackpot”, the first 24P HD feature to be released theatrically in North America. Other 24P HD features include “D.E.B.S.”, “When Do We Eat?” and “The Quiet”. He recently shot two features on the new Red One digital cinema camera and two television series on the Panavision Genesis camera.
Other recent projects include “Akeelah and the Bee” “Big Love” for HBO, the “United States of Tara” for Showtime. Many of his features have played at major film festivals over the years. “Assassination of a High School President” premiered at Sundance in 2008, followed by “Manure” the next year and “Jennifer’s Body” at the Toronto International Film Festival.
He also updated the classic textbook “Cinematography” with original author Kris Malkiewicz, and has written a number of articles about his own work for various filmmaking magazines.
Kubilay Uner
Composer Munich-born, L.A.-based composer Kubilay Uner has bounced around the planet and through many musical genres, which explains a thing or two about his individual approach to music.
With numerous features and other music-to-picture scores to his credit, as well as a number of concert music works performed, Kubi is as comfortable in the concert hall as he is on the dubbing stage. “Whether the music is part of a film or stands on its own, my goal is to deliver an intense experience, one that completely immerses and transforms the listener. I believe a good piece of music should take you on a journey. That’s what I want to achieve.”
This idea was also at the core of Film2Music, an international competition where Kubi invited filmmakers the world over to create a film to a track from his CD, Cinematic. Ninety-four films were submitted, and the winners and highlights were screened at the 2007 Sundance Film festival.
