DAVID BYRON, faculty member of the British American Drama Academy (BADA), will be visiting CalArts on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 12:15pm in the Coffeehouse. He’’ll discuss BADA’s Midsummer in Oxford conservatory program, which allows serious students of acting to spend four weeks during the month of July living and studying with some of the leading actors and directors of the British stage in Balliol College, Oxford. Anyone unable to attend may contact David at dbyron@badaonline.com.
Recent teachers include Sir Ben Kingsley, Alan Rickman, Kevin Spacey, Sir Derek Jacobi, Fiona Shaw, Jeremy Irons, James Bundy (Dean of the Yale School of Drama), Deborah Warner, John Barton (founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company), Mark Wing-Davey (Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts), Brian Cox, Simon Callow and others.
Central to the student’s education at BADA are classes in Shakespeare scene study and High Comedy (led by members of the RSC), Voice (led by the head vocal coach for the RSC), Movement, Physical Acting (led by the co-founder of Theatre de Complicite), Sonnets (led by John Barton) and others. Excursions are made to Stratford on Avon and performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Master Classes are held twice weekly. Students live, work and dine together with faculty in Balliol’s 12th century halls, making for a rare atmosphere of intimacy and collegiality. Financial aid is available.
DAVID BYRON teaches British theater history at Yale College and at BADA, both in London and at Oxford. A graduate of Yale and of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, David was an actor in London, New York and Los Angeles for twenty years. His experience both as an American theater student training in London and as a teacher of those students at the present time makes him especially sympathetic to the concerns of anyone considering study abroad.
