RAMAYANA: AN INDIAN EPIC
November 6, 2009 – November 8, 2009
RAMAYANA: AN INDIAN EPIC
Balinese music and dance by Gamelan Burat Wangi
Co-presented with The Music Circle
An ensemble of 25 gamelan players and 14 dancers enacts an exquisite Balinese adaptation of the Ramayana, the ancient Hindu epic brought to Bali from India more than a millennium ago. Directed and choreographed by the distinguished duo of I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, this dance drama of lust and abduction, of war and faith, is filled with characters who look like birds, monkeys and warriors but who may turn out to be kings and gods. Among the many distinctive refinements of the Balinese Ramayana are the electrifying dances of Hanoman, the monkey general who helps Rama rescue Sita from the clutches of Rahwana. The production features three special guest artists from Bali: drummer I Wayan Budha and dancers I Made Dwi Putra Yoga as Rama, and Anak Agung Gede Rahma Putra, as Hanoman. With a pre-show presentation on the aesthetics of Hindu-Balinese performing arts by ethnomusicologist Sue Carole DeVale.

Belarus Free Theatre | REDCAT

West Coast premiere
“Free to say what they want, where they want, and to whom they want.” The Times (London)
Established in 2005 in response to repression in “Europe’s last dictatorship,” the award-winning Belarusian company—now outlawed at home—stages a gripping original drama based on the true story of dissident Irina Krasovskaya and her husband Anatoly, who was “disappeared” 10 years ago. Their wrenching story is interwoven with parallel instances of political intimidation and violence in Asia and South America. Belarus Free Theatre is devoted to presenting dramas by banned Belarusian playwrights, whose work it also translates and publishes abroad. The troupe first began performing in private apartments and has since won the backing of prominent playwrights such as the late Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard and Václav Havel, as well as numerous artistic and human rights organizations. Discover Love is written by Nikolai Halezin and Natalia Koliada, and directed by Halezin. Choreography by Olga Skvortsova, with music by DJ Laurel. Performed in Russian with supertitles in English.

letter at year’s end from erik ehn
Dear All:
A moment to connect on all that’s going on in the school in the closing days of the term. In CalArts fashion, what might otherwise be an occasion for nostalgia is a report on all that’s unfolding and on the way.
More information about what’s pointed at below can be found at www.theatercalarts.com; an official season launch will take place when we return in September.
And there will be an All-School meeting to talk about this information at the Year End Picnic on the front lawn adjacent to the Mod Bridge immediately following All-School clean-up Tuesday, May 12th at 2:00 pm
Year End Picnic
+ All School Meeting Tuesday, May 12th at 2:00 pm
There are a number of projects taking place at the end of the semester that deserve our collective focus; they add life to the school, and expand our relationships with the world around us. Read more on letter at year’s end from erik ehn…
